Stevia Seasoning

You might have noticed that in all of my savory recipes, I use no salt. This is because in 2005, when I decided to go vegetarian, I also decided to eliminate all unhealthy foods from my diet. This list also included sugar, live yeast, caffeine, and alcohol. I did go vegetarian that year, then vegan in 2008, and today still rarely eat any of the foods I eliminated.

My reason for elimating salt was because I found it made managing my ADHD, PTSD, and an eating disorder I had at the time, much more difficult. I’m very sensitive to alot of foods, and salt makes me mentally hyper, anxious and stressed, and prone to mood swings. Without it, my mind and emotions are more even and regulated, my thoughts more focused, and that really helps me.

It’s actually pretty easy to eliminate salt from your diet and cooking as long as you read labels, like to cook and don’t eat out much. In regard to soy sauce, which is an irreplaceable vegan basic ingredient, I use Braggs soy sauce as its salt-free, and uses baking soda instead. For flavour I use herbs and spices, lemon juice and garlic, peppers and onions to flavour my food. They work very well, and after a short while, you don’t miss salt at all.

Note on Stevia Leaf Powder

I use this stevia blend in all my savory recipes. It works well to enhance and give body to a dish, and adds a bit of sweetness without sugar. It can be made ahead and used as you would use salt: in soups, pasta dishes, any tofu or tempeh dish, or any savory dish.

Not everyone likes stevia at first try, but it’s a great ingredient to cultivate a taste for. Super sweet and with zero sugar, chemicals or anything bad, it’s a much underrated super food. Please use the leaf powder only. White and liquid stevia are processed and have artificial sweeteners included.

This recipe is very easy and has only three ingredients: stevia leaf powder, mustard powder, and black pepper. Please give it a try if you want to reduce or eliminate the salt in your diet. Enjoy!
