Hot Fudge Sundaes

Hot Fudge Sundaes are a classic summer dessert that’s very easy to veganize. Made with vegan ice cream, and whip cream, they’re sure to bring back fond memories and create new ones.

Hot fudge sundae

A few years ago I inherited a complete set of Better Home and Garden Cookbooks from the late 1960s. They were filled with many great retro recipes I knew I needed to try and veganize. I especially wanted to try the desserts, and especially this one: classic hot fudge sundaes.

Hot fudge sundaes are an American classic and super fun to make and eat. They’re highly customizable and easy to make as well. If serving for a party, you can accomodate all your guest by creating a sundae bar featuring all their favorite vegan toppings. I like to keep mine simple and serve them with chopped almonds and fresh cherries, but the options are endless.

Making Hot Fudge Sundaes

Making hot fudge sundaes, beyond making the hot fudge sauce, is super easy. Once the hot fudge sauce is made, assemble the rest of the ingredients and have some fun!

Ingredients

To make the hot fudge sauce, just heat your coconut cream and sugar in a sauce pan. Heat over medium heat, stirring, until sugar has melted and mixture is starting to bubble. Reduce heat to medium low and add the chocolate chips and vegan butter. Stir until melted and remove from heat. Let cool and thicken in a small bowl for 30 minutes. Refrigerate for at least one hour to cool.

Note: Be sure to pick a vegan brand of sugar as a few are made with bone char. In Canada Lantic and Redpath products are all vegan. You can check online to see which companies are vegan in your country.

Process

To make the sundaes, leave the hot fudge sauce out at room temperature for 30 minutes or microwave it for 10-30 seconds to just slightly warm it.Once it’s softened and spoonable, scoop the ice cream into your cups. I used my two different vegan ice cream flavours for this recipe. Top with the cooled fudge sauce, and add some whip cream. Next, add your favorite toppings. I used fresh cherries and chopped almonds but you can add whatever you like, such as sprinkles, chopped peanuts, maraschino cherries and even candied ginger, banana chips or pineapple.

  • 1/2 cup chopped almonds

  • Place the chocolate chips in a small mixing bowl. Set aside.
  • In a small saucepan, combine the coconut cream and granulated sugar. Stir to mix and bring to a boil.

Making the Sundaes

  • To make sundae, let hot fudge sauce soften at room temperature. You can also microwave it for 10-30 seconds but don't let it melt or heat up completely.
  • Spoon two scoops of ice cream into serving glasses or bowl. Top with hot fudge sauce. Add whip cream and garnish with chopped almonds and fresh cherries, or whatever garnish you desire.
  • Serve immediately.

Notes

You can use peanuts and Maraschino cherries instead of almonds and fresh cherries.
You can refrigerate hot fudge sauce for up to a week before using. It can also be frozen.
